LYY’s carbon footprint in 2021

LYYn hiilijalanjälki vuonna 2021

LYY has calculated the carbon footprint of its operations in 2021. Carbon Footprint consists of LYY’s operations in terms of energy, travel, waste, procurement, services and events. The carbon footprint calculation was also done in 2020. The calculation has been carried out with the Hiilifiksu järjestö -calculator. Read more about the calculator here: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/hiilifiksu/laskuri/  LYY’s carbon footprint in 2021 is 10,131 kg CO2eq. i.e. a kilogram of carbon dioxide equivalent. It consists of different components, most of which are emissions from services and events. Emissions from Lovisa, a restaurant owned by LYY, and emissions from LYY’s sauna have been excluded from the calculation.  (Figure 1: LYY’s total emissions in percentages in 2021.)  Services and events account for 72% of the carbon footprint. In 2020, the share of services and events was 52%. The emissions from this year’s operations clearly show that the event culture has partially opened up after the pandemic period, and during the autumn of 2021, LYY has organized nearby events. In addition, the higher percentage has been affected by the Hyvinvointipassi (Wellness pass) service, which was transferred to LYY’s operations, with space emissions and other purchases.  The second largest share of the carbon footprint is energy, which accounts for 21% of total emissions. The share of energy mainly consists of the electricity consumption of LYY’s office. In 2021, the carbon footprint of the energy share will be 2,158 kg CO2eq, while in 2020 it will be 2,433 kg CO2eq. The share of energy thus decreased slightly.  Before calculation, it was expected that the share of travel in LYY’s operations would increase from 2020 to 2021, as there has been a slight shift from distance-working to nearby-working. There have been business trips tor example to SYL’s events during the autumn. However, the change in travel emissions was only small; travel emissions increased by only 52 kg CO2eq. from the previous year. The form of transport has been a significant choice in this background. LYY’s business trips have been made mainly by train, which has a really small share of the carbon footprint.  (Figure 2: LYY’s carbon footprint by sectors (kg CO2eq per year).)  In order to be able to line out the carbon footprint, it … Read more
