LYY Board decided to dismiss one employee and presented the dismissal of the editor-in-chief of the Lapin ylioppilaslehti to the Representative Council. In addition, the Board decided on temporary reductions in working hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The budget approved last year by LYY\u2019s Council of Representatives included personnel expense savings of \u20ac50,000, for which a specific decision has been made. These savings are driven by LYY\u2019s weak financial situation, which is now being addressed through the measures being impelemented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the cessation of the Student Magazine of Lapland, there are no grounds for continuing the employment of the Editor-in-Chief, and alternative work cannot be arranged. The board decided to terminate one employee themselves, in addition to proposing to the representative council that they terminate the editor-in-chief. The terminations do not impact LYY\u2019s performance of its statutory duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the small size of the workforce, formal change negotiations were not conducted. However, the staff were provided with a hearing session in accordance with the collective agreement, where the decisions were discussed together. A mutual understanding was reached with the workers\u2019 representative regarding the proposed terminations. Additionally, temporary reductions in working hours, which affect specific employees, were agreed upon in concensus with the employees concerned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe savings target set by the representative council was significant for an organization of LYY\u2019s size. In this unfortunate situation, however, I am pleased that we were able to find a joint solution,\u201d states the chairman of the executive board, Roope Rantala. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy implementing the proposed solutions, LYY will achieve a balanced budget in accordance with the Council of Representative\u2019s approved financial plan. However, we must also consider the future years during this year, as the temporary reductions in working hours being implemented now will inevitably lead to rising costs in the upcoming years.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe aim to pursue a long-term solution to the financial challenges of the student union within this year. When making decisions, it is important to ensure that LYY remains an attractive employer in the future,\u201d Rantala concludes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
LYY\u2019s Council of Representatives will address the matter regarding the termination of the Editor-in-Chief in its meeting on February 26,2024 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
